Being a huge foodie, I often find myself visiting various food markets and events at the weekend. But this was the best food event that I have been to in a long time, simply because I could eat most of the samples.

I know that going to any food event should not be about the free samples, and it should be about celebrating the food and products that are there and the Allergy and Free From show in London at the weekend, was for a me true celebration of just some of the great gluten free products that are now available.

The show was a was a real eye opener for me and even though I knew that there are a lot of gluten free companies out there, what I had not realised was just how many there actually are.

The show was a chance to not only try some of the many products that are now available, but it gave you the opportunity to talk to sellers and companies and tell them what you like and don’t like about their products. It was also the place to go and get some great bargains, because gluten free products do come at a small expense.

One of the many highlights for me was discovering that gluten free pasta can come in other shapes. I squealed as I found macaroni and pasta that was not either twists or penne. I was also pleased to know that I am not the only person who got excited about discovering pasta in a different shape. Not very long after I expressed my excitement, I heard another one and I turned and saw a girl with the biggest smile on her face. She said to me ‘wow pasta in a different shape,’ and we both shared our love for pasta, but also how frustrated we are with the same old boring shapes and how we had both tried to make macaroni with penne, but it was just not the same. Yes, dear reader you have guessed it, my next blog post will be macaroni and cheese and I will tell you more about the pasta.

One of my other highlights from the show and perhaps a gold discovery was gluten free wraps. Warburtons have recently launched their gluten free wrap, which is really yummy, perhaps ever so slightly thick, but they are very versatile and make a great pizza base. But an Irish company called BFree have a great range or bread and wraps. What I really liked about their wrap is that it was lovely and soft and it felt like it was the right thickness for me, so you know what I have for lunch all of this week!

The day gave me lots of inspiration and I am looking forward to trying some of the products that I bought.. some of them did not make it to my house and were consumed on the train home. If you missed out in this event there will be another event in Liverpool in October. It is well worth a visit and I am sure that you will not be disappointed and you will come away with a bargain or two as well as being armed with some great products that the shops don’t yet stock.

What I hope for in the future is that many of these companies that are available only online, eventually get some of their products into our supermarkets.

But the gluten free shows are not over for me, I am visiting the Lincolnshire Gluten Free show in Welingore on Saturday. So if you live near to Lincoln and you did not manage to get to London, then come along and meet both national and local companies who stock gluten free products.
